Search Engine Optimisation - what it means for Park Businesses [Infographics]

What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Basically put, SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of improving your website so that it appears in search engine results (such as Google or Bing).

Well done SEO means that pages on your website will appear higher up the rankings and for a greater variety of search results

An example of a Search Engine Results Page

After all, just think how often you go to the second page of Google when searching for stuff… Hardly ever? You’re not alone!

90% of searches end on Google’s first page and the higher up the list, the more clicks a result will get. So making sure your website is up there is crucial!

Breaking SEO down

What does SEO mean to you?

If you think of keywords when asked this question, you’re not alone. Many of our holiday park clients initially thought of SEO and keywords as synonymous. And while they are related, keywords are actually only one part of the whole picture.

The three sections of SEO

A rough way of breaking down these SEO sections would be:

  -  Technical SEO - the ‘under the bonnet’ improvements to make sure the website is working properly, pages are linked correctly and browsing is logical and fast

  -  Link building - the types of other websites that are linking to your own, and the internal structure of your website (ie. how pages link to each other)

  -  On-Page/Content - having a clear variety of pages to show your expertise on a subject and making improvements to the individual pages (by sticking to a clear, searchable topic and making sure elements are optimised)

How is SEO calculated?

Even these sections are just scratching the surface! Google has revealed that they have over 200 ranking factors to decide a website’s fate on their results pages (though they’re purposefully vague about the algorithm for how each is weighted and how SEO is actually calculated).

Undeniably there’s a lot to take in, but fortunately the best way to tackle SEO is actually by using common sense.

SEO is best done over a period of months

Having a better grasp of why it’s needed, coupled with small but steady progress (much of which goes hand-in-hand with other website improvements) should be at the heart of any SEO strategy.

So that’s what we’re going to cover in this article, as well as some of the SEO secrets we’ve picked up working in the industry for over a decade!
